Cycles and Intractability in Social Choice Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce the (j, k)-Kemeny rule – a generalization that aggregates weak orders. Special cases include approval voting, the mean rule and Borda mean rule, as well as the Borda count and plurality voting. Why, then, is the winner problem computationally simple for each of these other rules, but NP -hard for Kemeny? We show that winner intractability for the (j, k)-Kemeny rule first appears at the j = 3, k = 3 level. The proof reveals that computational complexity arises from the cyclic component in the fundamental decomposition −→w = −→w cycle + −→w cocycle of [16]. Thus the existence of majority cycles – the engine driving both Arrow’s impossibility theorem and the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem – also serves as a source of computational complexity in social choice.

Cycles and Intractability in a Large Class of Aggregation Rules
We introduce the (j, k)-Kemeny rule – a generalization of Kemeny’s voting rule that aggregates j-chotomous weak orders into a k-chotomous weak order. Special cases of (j, k)Kemeny include approval voting, the mean rule and Borda mean rule, as well as the Borda count and plurality voting. Why, then, is the winner problem computationally tractable for each of these other rules, but intractable fo...

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of matrix treatment and modern group reality therapy based on choice theory on resilience and social adjustment in methamphetamine-dependent men who are treated with buprenorphine. Methods: The research was a experimental study with a pretest-posttest with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of All m...
متن کاملEthnic Bargains, Group Instability, and Social Choice Theory
This article makes two arguments: first, it argues that theories connecting ethnic group mobilization with democratic bargaining are based, often unwittingly, on primordialist assumptions that bias them toward overestimating the intractability of ethnic group demands. Second, it proposes a synthesis of constructivist approaches to ethnic identity and social choice theory to show how we who stud...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...
متن کاملA Network Based Theory of Health Systems and Cycles of Well-being
There are two dominant approaches to describe and understand the anatomy of complete health and well-being systems internationally. Yet, neither approach has been able to either predict or explain occasional but dramatic crises in health and well-being systems around the world and in developed emerging market or developing country contexts. As the impacts of such events can be measured not simp...
